Future superstars: Akshath Reddy

Produturi Akshath Reddy, 20-year-old right hand batsman is among the most exciting talent identified. Akshath Reddy had a forgettable debut to his Ranji Trophy career against Rajasthan during the 2010-11 season in which he was dismissed for just 6 runs; thanks to another brilliant debut by Deepak Chahar who claimed 8 wickets for just 10 runs. But, this young gun who also bowl leg breaks occasionally is considered to be a bright prospect for Indian cricket team. He shot to limelight when he was named in the Indian squad for the Under-19 World Cup played in New Zealand in 2010.

Akshath Reddy, so far played 5 first-class matches and scored a total of 154 runs. His highest innings score of 70 runs from 141 balls against Tripura, playing at home. His average of 25.66 runs per innings does not reflect his talent. He is being perceived to be a big asset for Hyderabad Ranji Trophy side in the upcoming season.

Akshath Reddy, who is pursuing his Engineering from TKR Engineering College has performed exceptionally well in List-A one-day matches. In the limited overs version, Akshath Reddy has scored 340 runs from 8 outings at an average of 42.50 runs per innings. He scored one century and two half-centuries in this format with his highest score standing at 121 runs.

The hard hitting Akshath Reddy has proved his talent in the T20 format, by scoring a century _ 105 runs not out _ on debut against a strong side like Mumbai. His century has led Hyderabad team into semi-finals of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy played at Indore in the 2009-10 season. In this fast track format of the game, Akshath Reddy scored a total of 214 runs from 7 outings at an average of 35.66 runs per innings.

Akshath Reddy, who is on the radar of Deccan Chargers, is expected to make his IPL debut in the next couple of seasons.

According to his profile: Akshath Reddy, scored 359 runs from 5 matches at an average of 51 runs in Cooch Behar Trophy. He also scored 316 run from 5 outings in the Under-22 C K Nayudu Trophy tournament during the 2008-09 season. Akshath comes from a sports family and his father was a volley ball player of his times. Akshath Reddy states that Rahul ‘The Wall’ Dravid is his idol, but also admits that his batting style resembles that of Michael Hussey of Australia.

Future superstars of Hyderabad cricket

Who after VVS Laxman? This is one question, which has been bothering not just Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) officials, but all Hyderabad cricket lovers for considerable amount of time now. Though cricketers like Noel David and Pragyan Ojha represented India at the highest level, they failed to create the same aura as that of their predecessors. Indian cricket always had ‘Very Very Special’ expectations from cricketers of Hyderabad; and this is a huge responsibility that our young superstars have to carry on their shoulders.

Here we will try to bring out few names that are making great impression consistently at the State level and aspire to make it to Team India, one day. To begin with we will look at youngsters who made it to the Hyderabad State or Hyderabad Ranji teams and are waiting in the wings to rock at the National level. We will speak about their characteristics and their aspirations.

Hyderabad Ranji Team, which got relegated to Plate League from Super League has seen shuffling in the team, with new and talented players taking guard for the team. The debacle that Hyderabad cricket has undergone a couple of season back has forced Hyderabad cricket selectors to look beyond the obvious names and look for young blood to take Hyderabad cricket forward.

In the next few write-ups, we will take a look at such talent!
